Meet LadeBio

The Biometrics Laboratory da Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was installed on the Fundão campus in 2008. On that occasion, the activities of the Ergospirometry Laboratory were transferred from State Servants Hospital for the School of Physical Education and Sports.

The former Ergospirometry Laboratory at Hospital dos Servidores do Estado was implemented in 1998, through an agreement signed between the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and this hospital. From that time until the transfer to Fundão, our group carried out numerous functional assessments, both of healthy people and patients. We had the opportunity to accumulate experiences with tests for patients with heart disease, lung disease, patients with endocrine dysfunction and pediatric patients. We serve, in addition to these individuals, various groups of athletes, such as cyclists, triathletes and runners. In that period we created the Kinanthropometry course, started the weekly routine of article discussion and offered Scientific Initiation to students of undergraduate courses in Physical Education.

Until the deployment of the course de Master of Physical Education from UFRJ, several students who received training in our laboratory were absorbed bystricto sensuwith international excellence, such as courses in Physiology at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, Pharmacology, Medical Biochemistry and Mental Health at UFRJ. At that time, we had the pleasure of collaborating in the training of new exponents of Exercise Physiology, Exercise Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Neurosciences, such as professors Dr. Joyce Ferreira de Carvalho, Dra. Daniele Gabriel, Dra. Andrea Camaz Deslandes, Dr. Giovane Tortelote e Dr. Thiago Lemos.

Today, with LadeBio installed in the same environment as the Master's and Doctoral course and with institutional investments, there has been a substantial increase in the demand for scientific initiation. For this internship we receive students from different undergraduate courses. We receive, especially, graduate studentsLato sensuem Human Performance Sciences, which is offered by our laboratory.

LadeBio has aResearch linewho studies fatigue in its metabolic and neurophysiological aspects. In the first part of our line, we count on the meticulous work of Dr. Joyce F. Carvalho, Dr. Caleb Guedes, Dr. Renato Alvarenga, Dr. Luciano Alonso, MS Manoel Coutinho, MS Fernando Nogueira, MS Dailson Paulucio da Silva e of the students who are part of our Master's and Scientific Initiation group. In the aspects related to the nervous system, Dra. Andrea Deslandes, Dr. Pedro Ribeiro e to Dra. Bruna Velasques  support our research. Such partnerships have been presenting a fruitful and voluminous academic production.

Prof. Dr. Fernando Pompeu, head of LadeBio, has extensive experience in the area of assessment of trained and sedentary individuals. He is a specialist in Exercise Physiology and currently holds the position of Associate Professor at UFRJ. This academic started his studies as a Biometrics Monitor in the 1980s under the careful supervision of prof. Jose Rizzo Pinto. Completed a Master's in the area of Biosciences and Physical Activity (EEFD/UFRJ), when he had the opportunity to improve his techniques through courses offered by professors José Ney Ferraz Guimarães; Dr. Attila Josef Flegner and Dr. Maurício Leal Rocha. In 2001, he obtained the title of Doctor in the area of Biodynamics of Human Movement (EEFE/USP), under the guidance of Dr. Paulo Sergio Chagas Gomes. Following the example of his prestigious teachers, Prof. Fernando Pompeu intends to arouse interest in the understanding of human performance and collaborate in the training of young researchers in Exercise Physiology.
